Health Appointment Drivers - Millwood

Each day, dozens of our older or vision-impaired neighbors throughout Westchester and Putnam Counties are at risk of missing important physical therapy and non-emergency health appointments due to lack of transportation or inability to drive. TRA is a collaborative not-for-profit organization empowering these individuals to be engaged in their communities and live to their fullest potential by ensuring they have access to transportation.

Volunteer Drivers are needed to provide their neighbors with a ride to and/or from their appointments. Volunteers can offer as few or as many rides as they'd like—even one or two rides a month will make a difference in a neighbor's life. Bilingual volunteers, especially those who can speak Spanish, are especially welcome!

Rides are only scheduled Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and the average round-trip ride is 3 hours with an hour waiting at the doctor's office. Some volunteers like to go to the gym or get coffee while their rider is at their appointment. Volunteers can also request one-way trips.

Volunteer driver requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and auto insurance
  • Must be 21+ with two years of driving experience
  • Must pass a criminal history and background check (no cost to volunteer)
  • Must own a dependable vehicle
  • Must follow safety protocols; volunteers receive orientation and training

Volunteer benefits:

  • Supplemental auto and volunteer liability insurances (these supplement the volunteer's own personal policies)
  • Reimbursement for mileage
  • Reimbursement for online or in-person AARP Defensive Driving class after 50 hours of driving for TRA
  • Invitation to events and access to rewards

Testimonials from riders who use TRA's service:

"It is very stressful for a senior with so many doctors' appointments worrying about transportation. I not only get there but enjoy riding with kind caring people." — Virginia S.

"Without your services, I don't know what I would do with all the chemo appointments I have. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” — Maryellen L.
