Food Rescue Heroes (Drivers and Sorters)
TOUCH (Together Our Unity Can Heal) provides healthy food and supportive services to our neighbors with chronic illnesses. TOUCH works with the partner organizations of Rockland Community Against Hunger (RCAH) to distribute food to local food pantries. In 2021, its Food Recovery Program rescued over one million pounds of consumable food that otherwise would have ended up in landfills—feeding those in need while benefiting the environment.
Volunteer Food Rescue Heroes are needed to rescue food from local stores—picking up the food, loading it into their vehicles—and helping to unload it and stock it at TOUCH's food pantry. Volunteer drivers can commit to a weekly food rescue (Monday and Tuesday mornings are especially needed) or fill in when they can. Most food rescue runs take about an hour and can be done using the volunteer's own vehicle. Volunteers should be able to do some lifting; volunteers are also needed to help sort produce at the food pantry and remove the donated food items that are not consumable. Businesses, church or worship groups, teen groups, and community organizations are always welcome to volunteer!
Age Minimum (with Adult): 16+, Minimum Age:18+
