Growth and Retention Director

Destination Imagination is a global, volunteer-led nonprofit that hosts STEM/STEAM-focused creativity challenges for students. The organization is dedicated to inspiring K-12 students with projects that take them from imagination to innovation with the goal of encouraging critical thinking and interest in STEM/STEAM disciplines.

Destination Imagination of New York (NYDI) is seeking a Volunteer Director of Growth and Retention to create and implement the overall growth strategy of NYDI statewide.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead a team of volunteers to work on the Growth and Retention goals of NYDI
  • Refine and advise the board concerning NYDI's Growth and Retention goals, which currently include:
    • Work with existing teams, districts, and grassroots organizations to understand what their recruitment process is and create best practices
    • Develop a set of materials that can be used to recruit new team members/districts. Including but not limited to flyers, presentations, emails, social media posts, and competitive comparisons
    • Work with current NYDI school districts, teams, and grass roots organizations to grow the number of teams in each district/organization
    • Work with the NYDI Regional Directors to research, contact and recruit school districts that are not currently involved with NYDI. Utilize funding for underfunded districts effectively to build NYDI's reach
    • Respond to parent and district requests for more information
    • Utilize social media to target complementary organizations, such as PTA/PTO organizations, community groups, booster organizations, and "mom" groups
  • Meet in person or by teleconference with key growth and retention contacts as needed
  • Reports to the NYDI Affiliate Director and Board of Trustees

Time commitment:

  • 2-5 hours per week on average
  • Attend one virtual board meeting per month
  • Attend up to three (minimum one) one-day tournaments per year (located in Westchester, Buffalo, and Binghamton)
  • Additional meetings as required based on need

Qualifications:

  • Must be organized, entrepreneurial, and a self-starter who is able to work independently
  • Previous experience building and managing a team of volunteers is a plus 
  • Previous experience with fundraising is a plus
