2023 Senior Volunteers to Read to Kids

Lifting Up Westchester is partnering with Volunteer New York!'s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to host a special intergenerational literacy event benefiting young children—and it needs volunteers ages 55+ to help! Volunteers will be treated to pizza and dessert after the event.

This literacy project is one way to help young students prevent the "summer slide" and avoid losing academic ground over the summer months. Each volunteer will receive a literacy kit in drawstring backpacks to gift to their child mentees. Each kit contains a copy of the award-winning book, Last Stop on Market Street, with related literacy materials to supplement learning. Using these materials, volunteers with work with their child mentees to support learning around comprehension, story elements, sequencing, writing, comparison, and description.

Volunteer requirements:

  • Must be 55+
  • Must complete the attached Lifting Up Westchester volunteer agreement
  • Must be able to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination status (white vaccination passcard only; Excelsior Pass not accepted)
  • Must attend a short Zoom training session on Thursday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. or review orientation video and materials
  • Must enroll in Volunteer New York!'s RSVP program (it's free!)

Registration for this opportunity ends on June 27. Express interest below!

This program is part of RSVP of Westchester's Lost Learning initiative to help students disparately impacted by the pandemic. Lifting Up Westchester is one of RSVP's Lost Learning nonprofit partners, and their Summer Camp provides a recreational and academically enriching experience for children who are homeless or living in or near poverty who might otherwise spend their summers with no activities.
