Volunteer Caregiver Coaches
The role of a Caregiver Coach is to compassionately engage with caregivers whose loved ones are patients in the hospital or live in the community. Caregiver Coaches provide emotional support, help in navigating the hospital system, and share appropriate resources. This position requires someone who is willing to listen with a non-judgmental ear and provide companionship to people during difficult times in their lives. This is an incredibly rewarding volunteer position and coaches often feel that they get more out of it than they give.
Caregiver Coaches make a weekly commitment of 2 hours between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays of their choosing (Monday to Friday). The volunteers understand this work is important and are willing to make a long-term commitment. Many volunteers have been caregivers in the past, though it is not a requirement.
The position requires extensive training with Northern Westchester Hospital's social worker and takes several months to complete. Ongoing trainings occur at monthly coaches meetings, which take place the first Monday of each month from 12-2 p.m. Attendance is highly encouraged, and Caregiver Coaches often feel that their training is beneficial in all other areas of their lives as well.
