Writing Tutors for Adults
The Westchester Library System (WLS) is seeking Volunteer Writing Tutors to help adults earn their high school equivalency (HSE) diplomas. HSE Connect! adult students aim to pass the essay portion of the Reading and Language Arts (RLA) GED Subject Test, which is required by the NYS Department of Education to demonstrate basic high school-level proficiency.
Pause to consider the challenge of taking the time now—as an adult—to learn and apply all that you ingested during high school! To support an adult student, volunteers should be passionate about lifelong learning and willing to join the student on this journey. In addition to creatively offering patience, humor, and encouragement, tutors are asked to become proficient in navigating a few online resources and study tools that the Westchester Library System uses to support the student's learning.
Volunteers typically meet with the students via phone or video conferencing (e.g. Zoom), with opportunities to meet in person at local libraries. All training, curriculum, and materials are supplied by WLS. Volunteers are required to dedicate approximately 1-2 hours per week to assisting students. Tutors must have some digital proficiency (Zoom, web browsers, smartphone apps) or a willingness to learn; they do not need a teaching background—only a love of learning!
Age Minimum (with Adult): 19+, Minimum Age:19+
