Host Families for Summer Visitation Program
During Hour Children's summer program at Taconic and Bedford Hills Correctional Facilities, Volunteer Host Families welcome a child (or children) into their homes for the summer. These families provide a much-needed safe place for children to spend the night when they visit their mothers and participate in Children's Center programs ad Taconic and Bedford Correctional Facilities.
Children range from ages 6-17 and they stay with their host family for 4 or 5 nights. The Host Families drop off the children at the facility each day at 8:45 a.m. and pick them up after 2:45 p.m. This enables the mothers and their children to enjoy this special time to connect and bond; they share meals, play games, and engage in structured and educational activities. The children create long-lasting bonds with each other, reducing the sense of shame and isolation they may feel.
Host Families are all screened and must complete a full orientation to ensure they are prepared and comfortable in hosting. Hour Children provides support to the Host Family throughout the process. Host Families are encouraged to sign up with friends in their community or at work to build a strong support system.
