In Our Own Voice Speakers

NAMI Rockland is seeking individuals from diverse backgrounds to join its roster of speakers for its free "In Our Own Voice" program. Speaking for 40, 60, or 90 minutes, volunteers with lived experiences will provide a personal perspective as they speak openly about what it's like to have a mental health condition.

Presentations can take place both in person and virtually, and training is provided to all volunteer speakers. Express interest below to learn more!

The NAMI In Our Own Voice program was launched in 1996 and is available in 44 states. More than 9,500 volunteers have been trained to lead NAMI In Our Own Voice with presentations delivered to over 1,500,000 audience members, including to civic groups, educators, students (elementary to graduate school), individuals and family members of people with mental health challenges, law enforcement personnel, health care and social services staff, politicians, and veterans and active military personnel. A Spanish translation called En Nuestra Propia Voz de NAMI is available.

In Our Own Voice offers an opportunity to hear open and honest perspectives on a highly misunderstood topic. It provides audiences a chance to ask questions, allowing for a deeper understanding of mental health conditions and dispelling of stereotypes and misconceptions. It aims to provide an understanding that people with mental health conditions have lives enriched by hopes, dreams, and goals. The program also offers information on how to learn more about mental health and get involved with the mental health community.
