2024-2025 Environmental Ambassadors Program Mentors
Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC) is a non-profit organization that teaches youth about climate change, encourages and provides young people with opportunities to enter climate-related fields, and offers community members with strategies to survive in a climate destructive world. Its Environmental Student Ambassador Program gathers teams of students from participating high schools—including Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Port Chester—to learn about hazardous household materials and the importance of clean drinking water. The teens will then perform outreach, present informed research, design graphics, and more.
Volunteers with one or more of the following skills are needed to help guide these small teams of high school students (3-5 students) through their projects in this program:
- Social media marketing
- Marketing and communications
- Graphic design
- Journalism
- Chaperoning youth (ages 14-18)
Volunteer requirements:
- Age 18+
- Must enjoy inspiring and working with high school students
- Experience in one of the aforementioned fields
- Valid NYS driver's license a bonus
- An interest in water quality and environmental justice is a bonus and always welcome
Time commitments:
- The program meets virtually once a week on Fridays during the school year, and incorporates at least 2 in-person activities per semester. These in-person activities could include setting up booths at local farmer's markets, attending community events, or meetings with communities leaders.
- Express any availability between the months of August 2024-June 2025; availability is accepted on a rolling basis.
